Protein Powder OEM Equipment: Mixing Uniformity, Filling Accuracy and Metal Detection
Protein powder is among the strictest powdered formats on consistency - every scoop from the same tub must match, or both labelling compliance and user experience fall apart. That consistency comes from equipment selection and fixed parameters, not from an operator's hands. This guide explains, from the protein powder OEM equipment side, how the key machines are chosen.
1. Blending: twin-cone or V-blender depends on the material
Protein blends often mix several sources (whey, soy, pea) with flavour and micronutrients of very different density and particle size, and uneven mixing directly distorts nutrition claims. Twin-cone blenders tumble by gravity, are gentle on friable particles and reach good uniformity (RSD within 5 percent), but take longer per batch. V-blenders are faster and suit free-flowing powders. For formulas with probiotics or vitamins, prefer a low-shear machine so actives are not shattered or locally clumped.
2. Filling: auger metering accuracy
Tubs or stick packs are usually auger-metered; accuracy is driven by powder flow, auger clearance and speed. Protein is hygroscopic - humidity rises and it arches and feeds unevenly, so single-pack weight swings. Controls: a humidity-controlled room (45 to 55 percent RH), periodic calibration of auger-to-cup clearance, and net-content checks every 30 minutes. At sampling, measure the weight spread of 50 consecutive packs and confirm the filling CPK before production.
3. Foreign-matter rejection: metal detection and X-ray complement
On the protein line, metal comes from equipment wear and dropped tools; hard foreign matter (glass, stone, plastic) can enter with raw material. Metal detectors have sensitivity thresholds for ferrous, non-ferrous and stainless, usually placed before packing. X-ray finds denser non-metallic objects and is the second gate after metal detection. The logic is "metal first, then X-ray", with reject verification per batch using test pieces.
4. Verifying blend uniformity in practice
Uniformity is not "looks about right". Standard practice: sample at different points in the blender (top, middle, bottom, in/out), test protein by Kjeldahl or NIR, compute RSD; for micro-additions (vitamins, minerals) sample separately and check content uniformity, RSD usually under 5 to 10 percent. Only after uniformity passes may filling start. Many complaints trace to skipping this step, leaving "top and bottom of the same tub differ sharply in protein".
5. What to ask when specifying
A brand need not know every machine, but should ask three questions: what is the measured blend RSD, is there continuous filling-stability data, and how are rejection points and verification set up? Writing acceptance evidence for these three into the contract beats comparing equipment brands. Equipment is the means; stable consistency is the actual deliverable of protein powder contract manufacturing.
