Pressed Candy OEM: Tablet Weight Variation and Checkweighing

In pressed candy contract manufacturing, tablet weight is the tightest-watched number on the shop floor, and for a practical reason. Before a single tablet exists, the powder condition, the machine setup and the room humidity are all drifting quietly, and weight collects every one of those changes onto a single balance reading. A batch that runs steadily in the morning and wanders in the afternoon is usually not a broken press but a moisture shift in the room or segregation inside the hopper. Experienced operators therefore look at the weight trend first and decide from there whether the machine needs touching at all. This article unpacks the topic: how weight relates to content uniformity, the two adjustment points that matter most, the material-side influences, how to set a checkweigher, and a fault-finding order worth memorising.

Pressed Candy OEM: Tablet Weight Variation and Checkweighing

1. Weight variation guards content uniformity

Weight is often treated as a stand-alone metric, when in reality it works as an early guardian of content uniformity. Compression fills a die with a fixed volume of already blended powder and compacts it, so if the blend is sound, stable weight means each tablet carries a similar dose of active. Once weight begins to swing, uniformity is deteriorating with it, simply lagging behind in the laboratory report. That is why weight is used as the first in-process gate and content uniformity as confirmation. It also explains why the weight tolerance is normally tighter than the assay tolerance: the point is early warning rather than end-of-line rescue. For small tablets or formulas with a low active percentage, the guardian role matters even more, because the same percentage deviation removes far more absolute active mass, and the lower limit is easy to breach.

2. Fill depth and scraper: the two main levers

What actually sets the dose on a rotary press is the pairing of fill depth and scraper position. Fill depth determines how high the die is loaded, while the scraper removes surplus powder and levels the surface. Increase the depth and weight rises, but beyond a point the packing density inside the die becomes inconsistent and weight starts to scatter instead. Set the scraper too high and powder is dragged across the turntable, leaving uneven edges; set it too low and material is pulled back out of the die, producing a low, speed-sensitive weight. The two settings should never be finalised in isolation. Because higher turret speed shortens the time powder spends in the filling zone, weight falls unless depth is compensated. The usual discipline is to lock the top of the speed window, tune depth and scraper there, then verify weight at both ends of the range before accepting the setup.

3. The material side is routinely underestimated

When the same machine and settings produce unstable weight on a new raw material batch, the answer is almost always in the powder. Flowability comes first: a poorly flowing blend bridges in the hopper or feed shoe, so the die fills randomly and weight jumps rather than drifting. Particle size distribution is second, because fine fractions migrate downward under vibration, a segregation effect that makes weight fall steadily as the hopper empties - here topping up or adding an agitator solves more than repeated machine adjustment. Blend uniformity is third: if the premix already shows streaking or component separation, a perfectly stable weight still cannot protect the assay. Moisture is fourth, since a damp powder turns tacky, adheres near the scraper and pushes weight inexplicably upward. The practical response is to treat flow, particle size and moisture as routine incoming and pre-run checks rather than discoveries made after an alarm.

4. Setting a checkweigher so it earns its place

The value of an inline checkweigher is not rejection but visibility. Three thresholds make it useful. The first is an internal control line, tighter than the product specification, that prompts the operator to observe. The second is an alarm line that stops the run for investigation. The third is the reject line, where a signal triggers an air blast that diverts the out-of-tolerance tablet. Rejection must be verified on a schedule by feeding known weights, or deliberately heavy and light tablets, and confirming every one is diverted - and that none bounces back into the good stream after the blast. The instrument itself needs periodic calibration with certified weights, since vibration at the discharge and dust build-up both drift the reading, and cleaning should be tied to the line changeover routine.

5. A fault-finding order worth following

When weight alarms, resist the urge to start adjusting hardware. Work from simple to complex. First verify the scale with certified weights and rule out reading drift. Second sample powder from several points in the hopper and check moisture and particle size, which tells you whether the issue is segregation or pickup. Third inspect the tablets themselves for chipped edges, capping or sticking, since weight problems frequently travel with compression defects. Fourth check punches and dies, because worn tooling and polished-out die bores destabilise both fill and compaction in a way that worsens with running time. Only then return to matching fill depth, scraper position and turret speed. Record the humidity, speed and hopper level at each step; in six months those notes become the fastest route to diagnosing a repeat.

6. Make weight control a daily habit

Weight stability is not something you set once and inherit. Three habits carry it. Log weight hourly on a trend chart with limits and a visible observation band, so drift is seen before it alarms. Write the critical settings into the batch record - fill depth, scraper position, turret speed, room temperature and humidity - so an anomaly can be compared against the previous batch within minutes. And retain a full sample from every batch for later verification and customer discussion. Hold this gate and the downstream metrics behave: assay, disintegration and friability all become quieter, and the complaint heard most often in this industry, that this batch differs from the last, largely stops.

Tablet weight is a system problem - tooling, powder, environment and detection all feed into it. Treat it as a long-term process indicator rather than a one-off setup task, and the compression line genuinely settles down.
