Pressed Candy OEM Cost Breakdown: Tooling, Batch Yield and Packaging Minimums

Pressed candy generates more contract-manufacturing enquiries than any other format, and more quoting misunderstandings. A brand receives two quotes - 0.18 yuan per tablet and 0.26 - picks the cheaper one, then discovers at scale that tooling, packaging minimums and yield losses were billed separately, and the true unit cost is higher. The gap rarely comes from the processing fee. It comes from different assumptions about yield and batch size. This guide breaks down the cost structure of pressed candy OEM from the manufacturer's side and separates what can be squeezed from what will cost more later.

Pressed Candy OEM Cost Breakdown: Tooling, Batch Yield and Packaging Minimums

1. Six cost blocks make up a proper quotation

A disciplined quote itemises six blocks: raw and excipient materials, processing, tooling and setup, process loss, packaging materials, and testing plus documentation. Materials cover the active, filler, disintegrant, lubricant and any coating. The filler share is routinely underestimated: in a 0.6 g tablet the functional material may be only 80 mg, and everything else is excipient, where grade and origin drive real price differences. Processing is charged on machine time and labour and moves with tablet shape, weight and batch size. The remaining four blocks are the ones most often overlooked and most often added back after production starts.

Spreading all six across a single tablet before comparing is the first step towards a like-for-like judgement. Comparing processing rates or material-only prices almost always produces the wrong answer.

2. Tooling: the hidden threshold for shaped and debossed tablets

Standard round shallow-concave tooling is stock equipment at most plants and carries no extra charge. Shaped tooling has to be made to order, and a set for a medium-speed or high-speed rotary press typically runs from several thousand to over ten thousand yuan depending on profile complexity, whether letters or a logo are debossed, and the punch steel and surface treatment. Debossed designs need attention to character height and stroke width: fine strokes fill in during compression and coating, and the contract should state who pays for re-cutting the tools if that happens.

There is also the machine time absorbed by trial runs. A new shaped punch usually needs repeated adjustment of fill depth and ejection angle, and two to four hours of press time is normal. Whether that is inside the quoted price should be settled in advance.

3. Yield loss: the variable that separates two quotes

Loss occurs at several points: dust during granulation and sizing, reject tablets during press start-up, breakage in coating, and rejects on the blister or bottling line. Total loss for a conventional process sits between 3 and 8 percent, rising above 10 percent where powder flow is poor, the shape is complex or coating is difficult. Whether a quote assumes 3 percent or 8 percent moves the price by five points on its own.

How the loss is allocated matters more. Two conventions exist. Billing on material charged in means the brand pays for actual input and carries the loss. Billing on accepted finished output means the loss sits inside the unit price and the manufacturer carries the risk, usually at a higher unit price. Confirm which applies and what happens if loss exceeds the agreed figure.

4. Packaging minimums block small orders more than tablets do

First-time buyers consistently underestimate the packaging threshold. Bottle tooling and minimum order, label print runs, insert and carton plate charges frequently exceed the cost of the tablets themselves in the first batch. Stock bottle shapes may be available from 5,000 to 10,000 units; a custom bottle needs a mould and typically starts at 30,000 to 50,000. Foil laminate and PVC/PVDC rigid film for blisters carry minimum roll lengths as well.

The workable route is to launch with a stock bottle or a generic foil pouch, then move to custom packaging once volume justifies it. That lowers initial outlay and avoids writing off packaging if the formula or positioning shifts.

5. What can be compressed and what cannot

Three areas are fair game: packaging, through stock formats and fewer print colours and finishes; testing, by running type testing to the declared standard rather than duplicated or redundant panels; and batch consolidation, merging three small runs into one larger one. What should not be cut is material grade, process validation and necessary stability work. Swapping a cross-linked sodium carboxymethyl cellulose disintegrant for cheap starch lowers the unit price today and produces disintegration drift and complaints later. Skipping pilot trials to save time costs far more in rework than the validation ever would.

6. Three routes to a lower unit cost

First, raise tablet weight and cut tablet count. Holding daily intake constant while moving from three tablets a day to one raises the unit cost but drops packaging and logistics, and the total usually comes out ahead. Second, lengthen the run: merging a quarter's demand into two large batches spreads setup and line-clearance cost. Third, simplify the formula - fewer actives, focused on two or three core materials - which reduces both material and testing spend and lowers compatibility risk. All three need to be modelled jointly at sampling, not improvised once production has started.
